Hi Atoosa,

Ivanka was Trump’s senior advisor. To suggest she is innocent denies that she approved and co-operated with his regime + subsequent policy changes. She is complicit. When someone becomes a politician committing acts of political violence*, they lose some of the privacy and rights of the average citizen. I think mean tweets are fair. It’s no different than when the French said Marie Antionette said “let them eat cake” - gossip, sure, but also a cope, in a world where peasants were powerless.

*we are able to conceive of theft as a crime, but it is harder to imagine, for some reason, policies that kill and endanger people as crime.

Thanks Cecilia. I know you are not alone in your POV. I'm not necessarily suggesting she is innocent. I am, perhaps, wondering if there is space for our collective innocence and humanity. We have, in my opinion, become like machines toward each other. We are facilitated by machines and our hearts have hardened. I am saddened by the lack of humanity that the online world has engendered. That's what I'm advocating for. My question is, can we disagree without verbal violence? Perhaps my prayer for innocence sounds more like naivite. I accept that. But again - I'm not sure what good that tweet did or will do. I stand by that.

While I agree with a right to privacy, Ivanka publicly said she was 'unabashedly' pro choice while her father was in office. She was a member of his administration and had her own role to play in the decisions made there. She is a public figure and a celebrity in her own right due to her co-starring role on The Apprentice and her clothing and fashion accessories line. There is no hiding behind Daddy when the going gets rough, and blaming it all on him.

Thanks Pam. For me this conversation isn't so much about politics but rather the speed of communication bc of technology has created a cruelty toward public figures that has deleterious impact on our communities because it doesn't stop there. Even though this is a topic that I care deeply about, I still see and want to respect some boundaries where many people see and respect none. When we lose our humanity and compassion, I'm not sure who wins.
